North Kesteven Training Night

Eleven intrepid Grimsby Lynx Girls accepted an invitation to train with the mighty North Kesteven Girls squad one dark cold winters evening. The hour long journey was made to the South side of Lincoln with a buzz as it became apparent the girls were excited and nervous. For Grimsby's first foray into contact rugby with a far more experienced squad that has provided numerous players into the County and Regional squads, the Lynx had cause to be a little giddy!

The training ground was quiet and empty when Grimsby arrived. When they emerged from the changing room they were confronted with 50+ members of the NK Girls section! Somewhat larger than the Grimsby squad.

After the warm up drills using SAQ equipment the girls were split into their respective age groups. The under 14's concentrating on perfecting the all important techniques of tackling on bags and the finer points of rucking and mauling, they were then split into two teams for a training game. The ferocity of the NK under 14's initially caught the Grimsby girls off guard, until they found their feet and 'got stuck in' with the best of them.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the park, the under 17's were working on lineout techniques; lifting safely, receiving the ball from the hooker and getting the ball away. The Grimsby Lynx had only ever done lineout practice once before. Being literally lifted by the seat of your pants was a new experience and the Grimsby jumper did well to put her trust in the two experienced Kesteven young ladies doing the lifting, enough to let go of their hands and cleanly catch the ball without wobbling and throw it out to start the exercise!

Once the ball was away to the attacking line, the rest of the Lynx definitely played their parts almost to perfection, making ground, winning turn over ball and making superb tackles. In the words of the North Kesteven head coach, 'there is raw talent in there.' To have such a compliment passed made the Lynx coaching team very proud.

Grimsby came away, with a dead leg, a crunched shoulder and very very slight black eye yet the verdict from the Lynx after their first real contact with other girls has left them wanting more and really looking forward to doing it all again....... honestly!
