Scunthorpe IV 7 Grimsby III 0
Grimsby travelled to Heslam Park to take on their old foes Scunthorpe 4ths. Due to some sloppy missed tackles, Grimsby found themselves on the back foot and 10 yards from their own try line within the first five minutes. Using their much heavier pack, Scunthorpe drove a rolling maul with great efficiency to score their only try through Hewitt. Chafer converted to give the home side a seven-point lead. However, from this moment on, Grimsby dug their heels in. Out of the back of a Scunthorpe scrum, their scrum-half fired the ball through the backs, but the Grimsby defensive line was quickly up and Scunthorpe fumbled the ball because of the pressure. Chambers was clean through only to have the referee blow to say a Grimsby prop had been offside. Grimsby's scrum-half Jones was receiving some very unorthodox attention which was unnoticed by the official. The first half finished 7-0.
After a few position changes in the Grimsby pack, they started to gel and began to push Scunthorpe back. Grimsby contained the home side for the next 20 minutes, but were unable to capitalise on the advantage the forwards were providing because the backs' play was too one-dimensional. At this point, Scunthorpe came back at Grimsby, but with fierce try-stopping tackles from Spreadbury, Oliver and Waudby, the home side could not penetrate the line. Grimsby had one final chance, with the ball fired from the base of the scrum through the quick hands of Waudby to Spreadbury to Chambers. There was then an inside pop pass to Chambers who took it straight down the middle of the park only to be to stopped with a try-saving tackle from Westwood 15 yards from the line. After a bruising battle, the score ended 7-0 to the home side, which, in comparison to previous year, was an excellent result. Skipper Scottie would like to thank everyone who took part.
