Grimsby then went on to finish top of the group by hammering Ilkeston 5-0 with tries from Gray (2), Treacher, Rendall-Tyrrell & Grant, with some excellent support work from Rory Mayo.
This saw Grimsby drawn against fierce local rivals Scunthorpe in the quarter final resulting in a satisfying 3-1 win for Grimsby with tries from Rendall-Tyrrell, Gray & Jordan Hollington.
Grimsby then met the home side Newark in the semi final. The match was very tight and Grimsby managed to scrape through with a 1-0 win scored by Grant. This was an excellent result against a very strong Newark side that also had a lot of pace.
Grimsby then met Lincoln in the final but with a small squad and very tough qualifying games fatigue seemed to catch up with the players and Grimsby went down 2-0 to a much fresher Lincoln team, and received the runners up Trophy. However the players did exceptionally well and are a credit to the club adding a second trophy to the cabinet in 7 days.
Ilkeston Mini Festival
The Grimsby U10 side travelled to Ilkeston to take part in the IRUFC mini festival and came back as Plate winners. The first match saw Grimsby very unlucky to loose to a strong Derby side 3-0. In the second match Grimsby played the home side Ilkeston and won 3-1 with tries for Bradley Treacher, Ash Rendall-Tyrrell and Ross Grant. This seemed to give the side confidence and they went on to beat Nottingham 6-0 and Melbourne 6-1 to reach the final of the Plate competition. Further tries were scored by Grant (4) Rendall-Tyrrell (4) Rory Mayo (2) Jordan Hollington & Antony Ward, with excellent tackling and support work from Evan Picking & Lewis Dyson.
The final saw Grimsby drawn against a strong Paviors side. Paviors scored first, but within minutes Grimsby equalised with a try from Rendall-Tyrrell. Grimsby went very close on several occasions, but couldn't get the winner. The match finished 1-1 and with no extra time the Plate was shared. This was a tremendous team effort from a weakened Grimsby side and all of the players should be proud of themselves.
